In yet another damning blow for the Conservative party, the Labour candidate has won the division of Witney South and Central, snatching a seat from a Tory in David Cameron's own Oxfordshire constituency.

Laura Price won the seat after a surge in Ukip support, with just 10 votes more than the anti-EU party, polling 756. The outgoing Conservative candidate David Harvey came third with 697.

Miss Price told the Bicester Advertiser: "I think it does send a message to the national government when Labour can win in the heart of David Cameron's constituency."

Labour MPs have been crowing about the win on Twitter with Kezia Dugdale MP posting: "Amazing win for labour in Witney Central - look out David Cameron #onenationlabour"
