A horse has been killed after it bolted on to a major motorway and collided with a number of vehicles.

Police received reports of a horse loose on the eastbound carriageway of the M4 near Membury Services in Berkshire at around 4.45am today.

Many took to Twitter to report sightings of the poor creature:

One vehicle involved in the collision, a white van, overturned. Fire crews released the driver and he was taken to hospital but his injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

Thames Valley Police said the horse was killed but no one was injured. The carriageway remained closed at 8.30am while vehicles were removed from the scene.

Diversions were put in place at junction 15 and officers were working with the Highways Agency to reopen the carriageway, although no timeframe was given.

A police spokesman said: "Drivers are advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes."
