Members of ISIS have set about destroying ancient mosques and shrines in territory currently under their control, according to pictures recently posted online. Shia buildings, which followers of Sunni ISIS consider heretical, have been blown up and bulldozed in the city of Mosul and the town of Tal Afar.

The pictures were posted on a website that often pushes official statements from the radical Islamist sect that recently declared a new caliphate across the lands of Iraq and Syria. The Associated Press confirmed from people within Mosul and Tal Afar that the buildings had been destroyed. One Mosul resident told the Times of India: "We feel very sad for the demolition of these shrines, which we inherited from our fathers and grandfathers… They are landmarks in the city."
