Instagram Apologises After Giving Away Man's Account To Barcelona Footballer Andres Iniesta

Instagram Apologise For Giving Man's Account To Someone More Famous With The Same Name

Sharing a famous person's name can have its good points, except if you are on Instagram apparently.

The photo-sharing site shut down an account belonging to a man called Andrés Iniesta and gave his username, @ainiesta, to another Andrés Iniesta -- the captain of FC Barcelona.

Writing on his blog, the unassuming father said Instagram had closed his account for "infringing the terms of use..."

He was on holiday when the mix-up happened and was notified by friends who noticed that his username had been taken by the Spanish footballer, after he mysteriously appeared on their following list.

After failing to get a response from Instagram, Mr Iniesta said:

"I consider that my rights (we still have some on the internet) have been violated somehow.

"I haven’t done anything wrong and have lost not only my pictures, but being able to share important moments with my friends and family.

"What pains me is that all of this has happened without any explanation, not even a twitter response from Instagram."

Instagram have now apologised:

"We made a mistake here and restored the account as soon as we learned about it.

"Our apologies go out to Mr Iniesta for the trouble we caused him."

Order has been restored with Mr Iniesta getting his username back and the footballer assigned a new one @andresiniesta8, that now has over five million followers -- a following that his namesake does not appear to covet.
