Transgender Inmate Joanne Latham Found Dead In All-Male HMP Woodhill

Transgender Woman Found Dead In All-Male Prison

A transgender woman has been found dead in her cell in an all-male prison, the Ministry of Justice has confirmed.

Joanne Latham, 38, was found unresponsive on Friday morning at the top security facility in Milton Keynes and was pronounced dead at 6.20am following attempts to resuscitate her.

A prison service spokesperson said: "HMP Woodhill prisoner Joanne Latham was found unresponsive on the morning of Friday 27 November.

"Staff and paramedics attempted resuscitation but she was pronounced dead at 6.20am.

"As with all deaths in custody there will be an investigation by the independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman."

HMP Woodhill

HMP Woodhill is a Category A facility and Charles Bronson and Ian Huntley are among the notorious inmates to have been incarcerated there.

It is the second death of a transgender woman in a men's prison in the past month.

Thompson's boyfriend, Robert Steele, had spoken to her a day before she was discovered dead and booked a visit to the prison before her death, the BBC reported.

"She didn't like it in there because people were saying things to her because she was dressing as a female," he said.
