£36.2m a year from the Public Purse; 60 years and counting. A waste of our money, a symbol of a healthy society or a lucrative tourist attraction? What do you think?

Hope I don't lose my head for this cartoon; just adding to the royal discourse...

Everyone is missing the point here. Anyone born in the United States can become Head of State.
Not so here. Until 1983 we were "subjects" of the Crown not citizens of our country. This country moves forward at a snails pace . No wonder then that there is a feeling of desperation and hopelessness amongst poorer folk here when they are obliged to support a privileged family with their hard earned money in the civil list as well as police protection for them all. The Windsors should be treated like any other family in this country and all financial arrangements with them should cease. If they want to call themselves" King" or " Queen " let them do so but they can pay for the whole shooting match and pay their taxes like every other citizen . A president may not be so glamorous but it would send a message to everyone born here that they live in a meritocracy and can succeed .

What's the story mourning Tories?

I consider myself a pragmatic Royalist. I support the Royal Family staying a part of Britains make-up and don't care about the costs, but I'm not about to turn out for any of the Pomp and Pagentry. I like that the Royals symbolise our history and mentality. We dont revolt, we evolve. We stick with tradition but we move forward step by step carefully tweaking the system to our contempory desires, in a mostly logical and lasting way. I also think the Queen serves a far more important purpose than most credit her for. She is focal point for all people who are inclined to extreme patriotism and blind devotion - that over zelous devotion you find with party loyalists in for example, America. The British people are far less kind to our politicans and parties because I think our sycophants and people who could easily fall into a cult of an Authoritarian personality expel their energy on a powerless figure.

Ben looks rather young, I suggest he researches the finances of the royal family and the relationship those finances have to the British treasury, it really isn't as simple as £36.2m a year from us and counting....the cartoon is unoriginal and derivative too..

The Royals aren't just a tourist attraction- they keep a certain dignity in government. As I watch the American government become more entangled in financial corruption every day, my appreciation for that dignity afforded by the Royals only increases. The Royal family give the United Kingdom a depth of soul about which most (if not all) non-monarchy nations can only fantasize.

Good touristic attraction with no other value. I'm sure the cost to the state could be 10 times lower. And should be. The key is really to make sure this family has no residual power at all in the government.

The state would be a lot poorer if it didn't receive the revenue from the crown estates and the royal family certainly provide other "value".

Because you assume the Crown should keep the estate that, rightfully, belongs to the people and the government. this is the remnants of a family that basically reigned over millions over the centuries, stealing money and wealth from everyone. The whole estate should be owned by the government.

She seems nice and what's more, she and her family are free entertainment for us Americans. Thanks!

It's a fair price to pay not to have a President.

I suggest you have a look at the Queens financial records (found on her website) and see how from the Estates she manages for the UK she gives all the money made to the Taxman I quote:
"In the year to 31 March 2010, Crown Estate income surrendered amounted to £210 million"
She received back £32 million
Name me anybody else in the Uk who does likewise.
