Former News of the World managing editor Stuart Kuttner has become the latest person to be arrested in connection with the on-going investigation into phone hacking, according to media reports.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest and bail of a man in connection with the on-going investigation into phone hacking, but did not confirm his identity.
They said: "The 71-year old man arrested this morning, Tuesday 2 August, by Operation Weeting together with officers from Operation Elveden has been released on bail to a date later this month (August) pending further enquiries."
However The Guardian, which originally investigated claims of phone hacking, identified the man as Kuttner, along with a number of other media outlets.
Police said the man was arrested on allegations of intercepting phone calls, and of making illegal payments to the police in return for information.
As managing editor, the 71-year-old, who stepped down from his role at News International in 2009, would have overseen the authorisation of payments from the now closed newspaper.
Officers from Operation Weeting, the team conducting the investigation into phone hacking, arrested the man at 10.50am.
Members of Operation Elveden, the team looking into allegations of inappropriate payments to police, were also present at the arrest.
News International was not told in advance about the arrest.
Eleven people have now been arrested in connection with the phone hacking scandal, including former editors Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson, who both worked at News International during Kuttner's tenure.
To date, only Clive Goodman, the News of the World's former royal editor, and private investigator Glenn Mulcaire, have been charged.
