Colonel Gaddafi Makes Defiant Address As Tripoli Fighting Intensifies

Colonel Gaddafi has sought to rally the Libyan people on Sunday afternoon to defend Tripoli from rebel forces.

In a defiant state TV audio broadcast he said he remained in Libya and called on citizens to come from all regions to defend Tripoli.

Rebel officials and government officials offer varying accounts of the developments in Tripoli over the weekend. However, it seems that after months of fighting, the conflict is nearing a climax.

The White House issued its own statement of confidence on Sunday evening, predicting that Gaddafi's will not last long in the present fighting:

"We believe that Gaddafi's days are numbered, and that the Libyan people deserve a just, democratic and peaceful future," said a White House spokesman.
