A motorist has died as the remnants of Hurricane Katia brought 80mph winds to Britain.
Blustery conditions have left thousands without power, caused damage to buildings and caused travel disruption around the UK.
In County Durham, a driver died when a tree hit a car on the A688 at Dunhouse Quarry, between Staindrop and Barnard Castle.
Durham Police said a passenger in the car was taken to hospital in Darlington with injuries which are not thought to be life threatening following the incident.
Officers have issued fresh warnings about high winds in the area following the tragedy.
Elsewhere, high waves lashed coastal areas causing ferry companies to cancel scheduled departures, and trees and branches fell on train tracks and roads.
Forecasters said the fastest recorded gust was 82mph at Capel Curig in north Wales.
However, Scotland saw the brunt of the bad weather with blustery showers continuing for much of the day and the bad weather set to continue into Tuesday.
Alison Cobb, meteorologist for MeteoGroup, said: "Tuesday looks pretty similar at the moment. It will still be breezy across much of the UK, less windy, but still fresh to strong winds across many areas.
"The rain will be mostly across northern Scotland but it will gradually sink south into southern Scotland, Northern Ireland and the north east of England in the evening."
