EastEnders triumphed at the TV Choice Awards last night, picking up three coveted gongs.

The soap’s cast left Albert Square behind for the evening to watch EastEnders beat its long-running rival Coronation Street to the top award of Best Soap.

Meanwhile, stars Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace, who play the troubled but lovable Queen Vic landlords Alfie and Kat Moon, won Best Soap Actor and Actress gongs respectively.

However, Coronation Street picked up the prize for Best Soap Storyline with its 50th anniversary tram crash plot that saw three leading characters killed off.

The ceremony, held at the Savoy Hotel in central London, also proved a rewarding night for Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat with recognition for two separate shows.

Long-running BBC sci-fi favourite Doctor Who was named Best Family Drama and Sherlock, which Moffat co-writes with Mark Gatiss, was named best new drama.

Karen Gillan, who plays The Doctor’s flame-haired assistant, picked up the Best Actress gong.

Elsewhere, The Apprentice won the award for Best Reality Programme and Britain's Got Talent was named Best Talent Show.

The Inbetweeners won the Best Comedy Award, while BBC3's Being Human got the prize for Best Drama Series.
