A soldier has died after being shot during an exercise at a Ministry of Defence training ground in Kent.
The MoD has named the soldier as Fusilier Dean Griffiths from the 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh.
The 21-year-old was killed at the Lydd Ranges, a military firing range near Romney Marsh.
Police, who were called to the MoD training ground at 2.45pm yesterday, have confirmed that they are investigating "a shooting incident" in which "a soldier died".
Family and colleagues paid tribute to Griffiths, from Market Drayton, Shropshire, who it emerged was to become a father.
His brother, Dewi Griffiths, said: "Dean was fun, loving and caring and was so excited at becoming a father.
"He touched the lives of so many and we will all miss our Deano. We ask that we are given time to grieve."
Lt Col Stephen Webb MC, Commanding Officer of Chester-based 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh, said: "As a battalion we are hugely saddened by the death of Fusilier Griffiths.
"Intelligent, fit and skilful, he was an outstanding soldier with the potential for a long and very successful career in The Royal Welsh.
"He will be mourned by his many friends in the battalion and our deepest and most sincere sympathy goes to his girlfriend and his family at this very difficult time."
Earlier, a MoD spokesman said: "It is with regret that we can confirm that a soldier died at Lydd Ranges."
"The matter is subject to a civil police investigation and it would therefore be inappropriate to comment further whilst this is on going.
"We do our utmost to support families through the difficult times following the death of a loved one."
