Huge And Smart: HTC Sensation XL Lives Up To Its Name

HTC's latest phone, the HTC Sensation XL is designed to take on the Apple iPhone. Slim and powerful with a super bright screen, it packs an 8 megapixel camera with F2.2 lense and makes a big deal about music, social media and content.

It's XL by name, and XL by nature. The beast of a smart phone packs a 4.7" screen, around the size of a moleskine diary, or a small brick, but is thin as a biscuit at 9.9mm.

This reviewer found it a little large for her hands, but if you can reach over an octave on a piano, catch a rugby ball in one hand, or if your mitt accommodates a whole Big Mac at once, you'll be fine.

The XL is a content phone, made for entertainment. The huge, high res screen is designed to make the most of HTC's Watch video service. It also features Beats Audio, their recent acquisition, which works to perfect the sound you hear through their Beats headphones (walled garden alert! The sound from the XL is normal when heard through standard headphones).

A wide-angle lense and fast shutter speed will please Flickr users.

Usability is also improved on this model - menus like the share function on still or moving images are brought to the front, rather than hidden in menus.

And so to the tech spec. The phone operates on the Gingerbread operating system, has a 1.5GHz Qualcom chip, 16 GB and 768 mg of RAM.

With iPhone 4S priced from £499 on pre-order from Apple, and no iPhone 5 announced, this phone positions HTC as a serious player in the top end of the smart phone market.
