Jude Law has helped launch the 55th BFI London Film Festival in Leicester Square as he walked the red carpet at the opening gala screening of his new film, 360.
The Sherlock Holmes star appears with Rachel Weisz as a couple whose marriage is in trouble in a story of interconnected love and relationships linking characters from different cities and countries, directed by Brazilian film-maker Fernando Meirelles.
Law was joined on the red carpet by international stars of the film including Lucia Siposova, Moritz Bleibtreu and Gabriela Marcinkova.
Peter Morgan, writer of the screenplays for award-winning films The Queen and Frost/Nixon, wrote the script based on a 1900 play, La Ronde by Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler, and also makes a reluctant cameo in the film.
Morgan confessed: "That was horrible. I won't be doing that again. That was a cost-saving exercise. Every actor we could, we saved. And I did my best to get myself cut out of the film."
He added: "I would only do it to save cost. I wouldn't do it because a) I don't think I'm any good and b) because you spend all day sitting around on set. It's interminable. I don't know how they do it actually. Nothing made me want to write more than acting for a day."
The film's ensemble cast also includes Sir Anthony Hopkins and rap star Eminem.
Director Meirelles said: "I was quite shocked when we were invited because this is a small film and usually festivals open with big, bombastic films. But of course I felt very happy and very proud.
"I opened the festival in 2005 with The Constant Gardener so it's the second time in six years - not bad. I'm very proud of that."
The London Film Festival runs until October 27 and will feature 204 films, including 13 world premieres.
