Prince Charles may move the monarchy out of Buckingham Palace when he becomes king, according to a new book.
BBC journalist Andrew Marr claims that the heir to the throne plans to rule from Windsor Castle, in order to turn Buckingham Palace into a museum.
According to Marr, Prince Charles also wants to use the London palace to house a hotel and a conference centre to hold government events.
The claims are made in his book, The Diamond Queen, due to be published to mark the 60th year of the Queen's reign next year.
Marr writes: "His succession would be followed by a dramatic clearing out of the current Buckingham Palace staff and the arrival of his own team.
"One of the more dramatic ideas that has been discussed is for the Royal Family in his reign to leave Buckingham Palace entirely, leaving it as a kind of grand official government hotel and centre for events.
"The King would base himself not in London but at Windsor Castle."
But the Daily Telegraph reports a that spokesman for Clarence house insisted: "There have been no such meetings here or any plans made about such future arrangements."
If the Queen stays on the throne until 2015 she will become the longest serving British Monarch in history.
Marr claims that Charles has become increasingly concerned that he will not be able to outlive his mother and may never become king.
