Occupy London: UK Uncut Calls For Resignation Of Top Taxman

Campaign group UK Uncut joined the 'Occupy London' protesters outside St Paul's Cathedral on Monday before marching to Westminster to demand the resignation of Britain's top taxman.

UK Uncut want the permanent secretary for tax Hartnett to resign, accusing him of letting Goldman Sachs off around £10m of tax and Vodafone as much as £6bn.

But the direct action group, which campaigns against tax avoidance and evasion by British businesses, were prevented from reaching his office by police.

Hartnett has also been accused of lying to parliament about the alleged deal. MPs on the Commons public accounts committee have asked the cabinet secretary, Sir Gus O'Donnell, to look at reforming HMRC.

UK Uncut activist Sam Gilbert said the money given away to Vodafone would cover all the public sector cuts made by the government this year.

"Whilst 25,000 rank-and-file staff at HMRC have been fired, leaving the organisation almost incapable of functioning, Hartnett has been carving out a career as the most 'wined and dined' civil servant in Whitehall," he said.

"The money from Vodafone's £6bn tax dodge alone could have prevented all of the cuts in public services over the past year."

According to UK Uncut Vince Cable happened to walk past the protest and was followed to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills by demonstrators demanding the sacking of Hartnett.

St Paul's Cathedral decided to close its doors to members of the public on Friday because of the anti-capitalist protest taking place in its churchyard.
