Prince William will undertake a six-week tour of the Falkland Islands early next year, according to Sky News.
William, a serving search and rescue pilot in the RAF, is expected to leave for the disputed territory in the South Atlantic in January.
The heir’s deployment will fall on the 30th anniversary of the conflict, a move that could reignite tensions between London and Buenos Aires.
The Argentinian government maintain a claim of “Las Malvinas” and the posting of member of the royal family could be seen as politically insensitive.
Speculation on the prince’s possible posting to the Falklands has already stirred controversy. Following reports of his departure to the islands two years ago, the Argentinian foreign minister Jorge Taina said: “This only serves to once again highlight Britain's ongoing military presence in land and sea areas that are part of the Argentine Republic's national territories.”
The MoD are expected to confirm the plan later on Thursday.
