Ex-MP Cleared Of Pretending To Be An Aide To Oliver Letwin

Ex-MP Cleared Of Wrongdoing

The former Conservative MP who was arrested on suspicion of posing as an adviser to Cabinet Office minister Oliver Letwin has been cleared of committing any wrongdoing.

Matthew Gordon-Banks was said to have telephoned the Home Office to raise concerns about difficulties faced by Asians trying to enter the United Kingdom.

He was arrested and was interviewed at a London police station in September on suspicion of fraud. However he was subsequently found not to have committed any crime by the Metropolitan Police.

Gordon-Banks' wife Jane works in Letwin's private office in Whitehall.

The Daily Telegraph quoted a friend of Gordon-Banks at the time as saying ministers were trying to "silence" the former MP.

"This is not about money or personal gain," they told the paper. "It is about Matthew highlighting terrible injustices towards ethnic minorities by the UK Border Agency, and they don't like it. They are trying to silence him."
