Meryl Streep Transforms Herself Into Margaret Thatcher For 'The Iron Lady' (TRAILER)

Meryl Streep Transforms Herself For 'The Iron Lady'

Meryl Streep has long been known for her uncanny ability to lose herself in a role - from Australian Lindy Chamberlain wrongly accused of killing her daughter in the Australian outback thriller Cry In The Dark, to the Danish author Karen Blixen in the safari epic Out of Africa.

She's seemingly done it again, with a breathtakingly accurate representation of Margaret Thatcher in the upcoming film The Iron Lady.

For the role, Streep donned a variety of wigs and cosmetic prosthetics, but had only herself to rely on for the voice and look. Streep watched video tape of the former Prime Minister for months, to capture the sound, style and body language, to impressive effect.

The double Oscar winner is no doubt in line for another nod for her take on one of the country's most controversial leaders. Denis Thatcher is played by fellow Oscar winner Jim Broadbent, who will be seen in flashback as an elderly Maggie Thatcher reminisces about her days in power.

You can see Streep's transformation into Margaret Thatcher above in the first trailer for the film, which will be on our screens in January 2012:
