Alex Salmond Wins Spectator Magazine's 2011 Politician Of The Year Award

Politician Of The Year?

First Minister Alex Salmond has welcomed a "double hat-trick" of awards for his political leadership.

Mr Salmond won Spectator magazine's 2011 politician of the year award.

It comes on the back of last week`s politician of the year award by The Herald newspaper and the government of South Australia`s international climate change leadership award last month.

A spokesman for the First Minister claimed the gong as "a double hat-trick", as it is also the third Spectator award of his career.

Mr Salmond was named by the Spectator as parliamentarian of the year following the SNP's first Holyrood election success in 2007, and tactician of the year in 1998.

The Spectator said it rewarded him "for his achievement in winning an overall majority in the Scottish Parliament and seeing off the leaders of the other three main political parties in Scotland".

The spokesman said: "This is a hat-trick of awards for the First Minister in the last few weeks, and a hat-trick of Spectator awards.

"It is a reflection of the strength and popularity of the First Minister and SNP Government, and the progress that Scotland is making as we approach the referendum.

"The First Minister, and the people of Scotland, are clearly making the political weather across the UK and even Down Under."

The awards are judged by a panel of senior journalists across a range of media organisation.
