St Andrews: Conservative Student Association Burns Effigy Of Obama

Effigy Of President Obama Burned By Conservative Association At Scottish University

A Conservative student association at St Andrews University has sparked controversy by burning an effigy of President Barack Obama.

The bonfire is reported to have happened on Friday on the East Sands beach near the famous Scottish town.

The association has since apologised for the incident, while the university said it was investigating.

Speaking to the BBC, Matthew Marshall of the St Andrews Conservative Association admitted: “It was a stupid thing to do and we apologise for any offence caused.”

"President Obama is an important ally to the British government," he added.

Speaking to The Huffington Post UK, James Mills, Former Chairman of the St Andrews Labour Club, suggested that the association has a history of this type of behaviour.

“One year they burned an effigy of me, alongside one of Nelson Mandela,” said Mills.

“It seems you can change the leader but you can’t change the small minded ethos of Conservative ideology,” he added.

Mills urged the Conservative Party and the prime minister to “condemn this obscene act”.
