The Met Office issued severe weather warnings on Monday after a weekend of freezing conditions.

Cumbria, County Durham Northumberland and County Durham were covered in snow over the weekend, but freezing conditions are set to spread to parts of Yorkshire over the next few days.

Police in Scotland and the north of England are warning motorists in particular to take extra care with all the treacherous sleet and snow. A lorry driver died in Lincolnshire on Monday morning after he skidded off a trunk road.

Looking ahead to our chances of a white Christmas, the Met Office has not yet made a firm prediction but bookmakers have now slashed the odds after this early snowfall. There is now a 40% chance that British people will be seeing snow when they draw back the curtains on Christmas morning.
