A man has died after being hit by a train at South Croydon station.

The incident spells long delays for commuters in the area, with all services through East Croydon station severely disrupted.

British Transport Police say the incident occurred at 3.47pm and was not being treated as suspicious.

The man was hit by the 3.24pm from Caterham to Victoria and the incident began trending on Twitter as commuters searched for alternative ways to get home.

A faulty train at Brighton station is causing further delays on the line.

Delays of up to 60 minutes are currently occurring and commuters are advised to check the Southern Railway website for information.
