Chinese Fugitive Zhang Guofeng Hides From Police On TV Show

A Chinese fugitive evaded police by hiding in plain sight as a popular actor on a TV series. Zhang Guofeng (real name Ji Siguang) found fame in appropriately-named spy drama "Lurk" but was wanted for an assault on a police officer that happened 13 years previously.

He was acting as a Buddhist monk in the period drama Shaolin Tigers when police finally rumbled his real identity.

Singuag himself reportedly never watched his own shows, nervous that his face would be easily recognisable. However it was an anonymous tip off that gave the game away, rather than officers being fans of Siguang's TV work.

Confessing to his past crimes, including assaulting a police officer and taking their gun during a 1998 street robbery in Qiqihar, the 39-year-old told how he had moved from city-to-city before finding work as an extra on a film set at Hengdian World Studios. Working his way up, he soon got larger roles.

State-run Xinhua news agency reported that the three other suspects in the street robbery were caught only a few days after the incident.
