Motorists are facing treacherous conditions with ice warnings in place for the whole country until Monday.
There will be no let-up in Britain's cold snap as sub-zero temperatures continue throughout the weekend.
The Met Office issued warnings of ice which are due to stay in place until 10am on Monday,
Saturday morning is due to be cold and frosty and, in places, an icy start, according to forecasters. Some areas will have scattered rain, sleet and snow showers, and there may be some repeats of winter wonderland scenes many parts of the country saw on Friday.
Northern Ireland, Wales and the South East woke up to the white stuff on Friday as heavy rain brought by a low pressure system turned to sleet or snow. There was 6cm of snow recorded in Glasgow, 2cm in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, and 4cm in parts of Northern Ireland.
Lower-than-average temperatures will continue and the mercury is likely to drop to minus 1C in the south of England and Wales, minus 2C in Yorkshire, minus 4C in the Borders and minus 6C in Scotland over the weekend, said Clare Allen, forecaster for MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association.
"We've been experiencing snow mainly over higher ground, in Wales, Scotland, the Pennines, the Lake District, but it's wet and sleety snow so is not settling," she said. "The rest of the country is expected to remain very cold with widespread frosts and everywhere below zero, apart from the South West. There will be some more wintry showers, mainly in the north and west, with hail, sleet and snow expected in Scotland and northern England."
Motorists have been urged to take extra care on the roads - on Friday Cumbria Police said they were called to a number of incidents on the A595 at Moota where motorists slid off the road.
The AA also warned drivers to make sure they are prepared for the unsettled weather. The Highways Agency said it is well prepared for the cold weather, with a fleet of 500 state-of-the-art winter vehicles on stand-by and enough salt to deal with severe conditions.
The recent cold weather led Ladbrokes to slash the odds of a white Christmas to a 3/1 chance that London will have snow on December 25. Edinburgh and Glasgow saw their odds cut to 9/4.
