Two men have been seriously injured after an explosion at a former colliery, police have said.
The men aged 38 and 26 are believed to have potentially life-threatening injuries following the incident at the former Welbeck Colliery near Meden Vale in Nottinghamshire.
A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said emergency services were called to the site around 7pm on New Year's Eve.
The spokesman said: "Nottinghamshire police can confirm that it is investigating the cause of an explosion at the former Welbeck Colliery near Meden Vale on New Year's Eve.
"Two men aged 38 and 26 were found at the site with serious facial burns.
"They have been taken to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham and their injuries are believed to be potentially life-threatening."
The Health and Safety Executive has been informed of the incident and the site will remained cordoned off while investigations are carried out.
