When Ole the Welsh corgi was swept away in an avalanche which killed one of its owners, it was thought he had suffered the same fate.
But four days later the pup has turned up at the motel in Montana where his owners had stayed the night before the accident happened.
Ole had been out on the 9,200-foot Index Peak with owners Dave and Kerry Gaillard when the avalanche broke.
Dave was tragically buried by the funnelling snow and Ole was swept away as Kerry -- who was at the edge of the avalanche -- clung on to a tree.
While search-and-rescue personnel were dispatched, they could not save Dave and they also believed Ole, who could not be found, was buried at the site.
However, four days later the dog somehow made his way back to the motel four miles away, and was found hungry and cold looking at the door of the room where the family had been staying.
The family -- who were creating a small memorial to Ole -- say they were overjoyed to then receive the phone call to say he had survived.
Gaillard's step-daughter, Silver Brelsford said: "It was a really nice moment because we all had a moment of happiness it was nice to share that."
