Hanged Soldier Anne-Marie Ellement 'Never Recovered' After Allegedly Being Raped By Army Colleagues

Soldier Who Hanged Herself Never Got Over Alleged Rape, Sister Tells Inquest

The family of a female soldier, who was found hanged at her barracks in October last year, have told how she "never recovered" from allegedly being raped by two colleagues.

As Corporal Anne-Marie Ellement, 30, had been drinking and couldn't remember the details of the incident, neither soldier was charged over the alleged attack. However her sister, Sharon Hardy, told the inquest into her death that Ellement had been left devastated that "no one believed her."

"I believe the Royal Military Police have failed in their duty of care to my sister. They should be held to account," said Hardy.

"She tried so hard for years to accomplish her dream of joining the Army that there is no way she would jeopardise her career by lying about two soldiers in her unit."

An inquest into Anne-Marie's death heard that she was a "nervous wreck", working 80-hour weeks. The court also heard that the victim had recently heard that her former boyfriend had started seeing a new girlfriend.

She was found dead outside her accommodation block at Bulford Barracks, Wiltshire, after writing 'I'm sorry' in lipstick on a mirror in her bedroom.

Coroner Ian Singleton recorded that the soldier, who joined the military police in 2006, took her own life.
