Teen Cyclist Killed In Hit-And-Run

A teenage cyclist has died following a collision with a car which failed to stop after the accident, police said.

The 17-year-old male youth died a few hours after the crash in Deptford, south-east London.

Officers were called at about 5pm on Friday to Deptford Church Street, at the junction with Bronze Street, a Scotland Yard spokesman said.

The cyclist was in collision with a silver Audi on a pedestrian crossing.

The car failed to stop and the driver continued south along Deptford Church Street, then turned around at traffic lights before coming back to the scene, stopping on the opposite carriageway then driving off again.

The car was found abandoned in Watergate Street, Deptford, at about 7pm on Friday.

The cyclist was taken by air ambulance to King's College Hospital with severe injuries. He died there at 8.20pm on Friday.

A 27-year-old man was arrested at about 2.30pm on Saturday, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failure to stop. He has been bailed to a date in May.

Police asked anyone who witnessed the collision or had information that might assist police to call the road death investigation unit at Catford traffic garage on 020 8285 1574, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
