Sony To Cut 10,000 Jobs: Fears For UK Workers

Workers Fearful After Sony Announces It Will Cut 10,000 Jobs

Sony workers are waiting to hear if they will be affected by an announcement of 10,000 job losses, 6% of the electronics giant's global workforce.

The job cuts will affect staff working in businesses that are being sold, such as Sony's chemicals division.

Sony employs around 450 people at a plant near Bridgend in South Wales.

New Sony chief executive and president Kazuo Hirai outlined his business strategy in Tokyo as he pledged to revive the electronics and entertainment company.

Earlier this week Sony forecast a record annual loss of £4 billion, double its previous estimate.

Mr Hirai said Sony would turn around its TV business, which has lost money for eight years, by March 2014.

A Sony UK spokesman said: "Sony Europe will respond to the challenges set by Tokyo in due course."
