The Angels’ Share is the latest film to hit the big screen from director Ken Loach.
Loach has teamed up with screenwriter Paul Laverty, Roger Allam and John Henshaw. Together they bring us the story of Robbie, a new father and ex-offender eager to put his old ways behind him and, with the help of his hopeless friends, make it big in the whiskey industry.
The Angels’ Share is nominated for the Palme D’Or at Cannes. If successful, this would be Loach's second Palme D’Or, having won in 2006 for The Wind That Shakes The Barley.
Famed as a pioneer in social realist cinema, Loach is best known for Kes, Sweet Sixteen and My Name Is Joe.
He may not shake up the Cannes cobbles quite like Lars Von Trier managed last year, but Loach prides himself on circling round the establishment. In 1977 he refused an OBE for his film making, unwilling to accept anything so heavily associated with monarchy and empire.
The Angels' Share is in UK cinemas on 1 June.
