The long-awaited next instalment in the critically-lauded BioShock series has been delayed until 2013.
BioShock Infinite - which will switch the original two games' underwater setting to that of an art deco floating city - was originally set for release in October 2012.
But now the game will be released on 26 February in North America, apparently to apply final spit and polish - or perhaps to provide space for Grand Theft Auto V's - theoretical - release in October.
At least one analyst has suggested Rockstar Games and BioShock publisher 2K, which are owned by games giant Take-Two Interactive, might be looking to coordinate big releases - although that remains speculation.
In any case, the game will not be shown at either E3 or Gamescom, developers Irrational Games have now said. A final UK release date has not been confirmed.
"When we announced the release date of BioShock Infinite in March, we felt pretty good about the timing," said Ken Levine, co-founder of Irrational Games, in a blog post on the company's website.
"Since then, we've come to realise that some specific tweaks and improvements will make Infinite into something even more extraordinary.
"Therefore, to give our talented team the time they need, we've decided to move the game's release."
He added: "The great can be made greater, and we owe it to both ourselves and to you, our fans, to take this opportunity."
