A pregnant woman is in intensive care after she was found with four stab wounds to her neck and upper body.
Emergency services were called to a house in The Parade, Northgate, Crawley, during the early hours of Saturday where they found the 23-year-old woman with serious injuries, a Sussex Police spokesman said.
He said the pregnancy was unaffected by the injuries the woman received.
She was treated at the Crawley property and following assessment at East Surrey Hospital, Redhill, Surrey, she was transferred to St George's Hospital in Tooting, south London, where she underwent an operation and is now in the intensive care unit, police said.
Her condition is described as conscious and stable, the spokesman added.
Shahid Mahmood, 25, a labourer, of The Parade, Northgate, Crawley, West Sussex, has been charged with attempted murder and remains in custody.
He will appear at Mid Sussex Magistrates' Court today, the police spokesman said.
Detective Inspector Jim McKnight said: "This is an incident arising from a specific set of circumstances and police do not believe that any other individual is at risk.
"We would like to thank the local community for their understanding whilst on going police activity, including searches, takes place in the vicinity.
"The location of this incident remains subject of a forensic examination and the area around remains cordoned off."
