Samba Mobile Launches Free, Ad-Supported Mobile Broadband

An ad-supported free mobile broadband service has launched in the UK for the first time.

Samba mobile offers users cost-free 3G data for tablets and iPads in return for watching adverts to build up 'credit'.

After buying a sim card and dongle, users can decide when to watch ads, which often require some interaction to make sure they are watched.

When they've watched enough they can get online for free - until their credit runs out.

The service also warns that web usage may be tracked, and that pornography and other controversial material may not be watched.

The collected data includes "traffic data, location data, weblogs, URLs, search terms and other communication data".

It is estimated that watching about two and a half minutes of ads per day will earn 500+mb per month of credit. You can also earn credit by buying an advertised product, or purchasing more data outright.

The service uses Three mobile'a data network.

Ben Atherton, the service's founder, says that brands including Xbox Kinect, Dell and Clinique had signed up, but added that brands can restrict how often each video is watched.
