A man has pleaded guilty to common assault after squirting his girlfriend with brown sauce because she refused to stop reading aloud passages from racy novel 50 Shades Of Grey.
Raymond Hodgson, 31, told the Carlisle News and Star it had been his intention to show his girlfriend Emma McCormick the real definition of "saucy" after becoming angered that his girlfriend was indulging in the erotic bestseller.
Hodgson described the tome as "distasteful" and "pornographic" in a police interview, reported the News and Star.
The bestselling book by EL James tells the story of a young university student who engages in a voyage of sexual discovery with businessman Christian Grey. Selling more than 20 million copies worldwide, the novel has been dubbed "mummy porn" because of its popularity with suburban mothers.
Carlisle Magistrates Court heard that the argument over the erotic novel escalated over two days after the initial row over the reading aloud of the passages. After a number of texts were exchanged, matters came to a head and Hodgson went over to McCormick's house armed with a bottle of brown sauce.

Hodgson is then alleged to have squirted the condiment all over his girlfriend of five years, and slapped her once in the face. The second charge Hodgson denied.
Malcolm Dodds who was representing Hodgson told the court: “Emma says it stung her eyes and it was all over the walls, which she had to clean up afterwards. I’ve spoken to Raymond and he’s extremely sorry about it.
“He was angry that she suggested he slapped her because he hadn’t. But they are now friends and they have been in touch with each other.”
Hodgson was given a curfew and ordered to pay a £100 fine and £85 towards the prosecution costs.
