A man has been charged with the murder of a two-year-old girl who was reported to have fallen down stairs at her home.
Paramedics called to the house in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, discovered that Roxie Jo-Anne Archer had suffered a head injury. She was taken to hospital from the address in Elizabeth Street in the early hours of March 10 but died the following day.
Her mother, Sophie, had gone on a surprise trip to New York with her father to celebrate her 21st birthday and was informed of the tragedy as they arrived in the United States.
A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Ben Raftery, 20, from the Gorton area, has been charged with murder. He is due to appear at Tameside Magistrates' Court today [16 August]."
In a statement issued by police shortly after her death, her family said: "Roxie was a beautiful and clever little girl who had a smile that warmed the hearts of everyone who knew her.
"She had huge endearing eyes and a smile that filled a room. She loved to sing and dance, a little princess with a mischievous streak. Roxie has been tragically taken from us and heaven gained the brightest of all the stars."
