His mother, Hannah MacLennan, who went into labour at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, Essex, shortly after 6am, said: "As soon as he was born the midwife came in and pointed out the timing.

"We were already celebrating and this makes it all the more special.

"He was due on the 18th so it's come as a bit of a surprise.

"It's a great little story which we will be telling for years to come and it will give him his 15 minutes of fame."

Miss MacLennan, 34, an admin worker at an investment bank, and her husband, Andrew Talmage, 39, who works in car restoration, already have one son, three-year-old Jack.

The couple, from High Ongar, Essex, were expected to return home with Oliver, who weighed 7lb, later on Wednesday.

Miss MacLennan added: "It's great to have a brother for Jack. I always wanted two children and we're not planning anymore.

"We've told the rest of the family the news and everybody is really happy."

Mr Talmage said: "We're just delighted to have a healthy baby - anything else is just a nice extra."

Many people consider 12/12/12 to be a lucky day and register offices across the country have reported a surge in wedding bookings.

It later emerged that another baby also recorded the special birth date - after arriving nine days overdue.

Sienna Mai was born to parents Sarah Barkus and Pete Hutchinson at Leicester Royal Infirmary at precisely 12 minutes past 12pm on 12 December, 2012.

Miss Barkus, 29, said: "It hasn't sunk in yet that she is here. I hadn't thought about it for a second that she could arrive at that time.

"I was due on 3 December and was booked in for an epidural tomorrow, so I was just glad she arrived safely. It does make Sienna really special and, hopefully, a lucky star."

Proud new father Mr Hutchinson, 28, said: "I had joked around at work with my mates about the possibility of her being born on the 12/12/12, but it wasn't until we were in the delivery room, just before 12 noon, when we realised she could be born at 12 minutes past 12.

"All our family and friends have been amazed."

Midwife Lizzy Archer, who delivered the baby, said: "It wasn't until she had arrived that I checked the time to realise Sienna had arrived at such an historical time.

"I think it is really special and I am delighted for Sarah and Pete."

The delighted couple are now looking forward to taking their new arrival home to Countesthorpe in Leicestershire to meet the rest of the family, including her new big brother, 13-year-old Liam.
