A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to place a 30-second advert for Nasa in cinemas showing the new Star Trek film.
Nasa's inspirational clip 'We Are The Explorers' has been seen more than 200,000 times since it was uploaded to YouTube a year ago.
But with the agency technically unable to buy advertising space, it's unable to put the trailer into cinemas on its own.
Now an enterprising internet user has risen to the challenge, and is seeking $33,000 to buy ad space in 50 theatres in the US, for eight weeks, starting on May 17 - when Star Trek: Into Darkness is released. The idea is to show a recut 30-second version of the ad highlighting the USA's real-life achievements in space.
Its creators said:
By backing this 30 second trailer in the top movie theater markets around the United States, you can show our students and young people that we're in an exciting new era of space exploration. Now is the time to reach them - to remind them that an inspiring space program awaits, one that is worthy of their ambition.
The ad is definitely a moving and inspiring watch - though other space agencies including that of Russia - which Nasa currently uses to reach the International Space Station, and the European Space Agency which recently revealed the true age, composition and scale of the universe, might also have a claim to that 'Explorers' title.
