Former South African President Nelson Mandela has been admitted to hospital with a recurrence of a lung infection.

Current premier Jacob Zuma confirmed the 94-year-old was taken to hospital just before midnight on Wednesday.

" We appeal to the people of South Africa and the world to pray for our beloved Madiba and his family and to keep them in their thoughts," he said.
Mandela spent 18 days in hospital in December, being treated for a lung infection and gallstones.
