Everything must come to an end. The departure of Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad marks the culmination of an era of bad guys who reached a truly epic level of villainousness in the past decade.

Between them, this not-so-golden generation defied the West and stuck two fingers up to democracy. They sought nuclear weapons and inspired their own catchphrase, the 'axis of evil'.

Some, like Ahmadinejad, are still with us, pondering a post-despot career.

Others have left for the great dictatorship in the sky, and there are signs that the next generation might be pretty bad too.
