Chelsea have confirmed in a statement they had made a bid for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, but no players were offered in exchange.
United rejected Chelsea's £10 million offer but briefed the media the Blues had offered one of Mata and Luíz as part of a potential deal.
Both players have been heavily linked with transfers this summer, but Chelsea stated neither player was offered to United as a makeweight.
"Chelsea can confirm that yesterday it made a written offer to Manchester United for the transfer of Wayne Rooney. Although the terms of the offer are confidential, for the avoidance of doubt and contrary to what is apparently being briefed to press in Sydney, the proposed purchase price does not include the transfer or loan of any player from Chelsea to Manchester United."
Spain playmaker Mata and Brazil defender Luíz are absent from Chelsea's Asia tour after being granted an extended break following the Confederations Cup.
