Disney has developed an algorithm which can take virtually any 2D photo and turn it into a fully 3D landscape.
The idea was the result of the entertainment giant's Disney Research scheme, which sees its engineers worth with a number of universities on new technology.
The new program runs on consumer-grade computers, and is able to sense the depth of objects by analysing the pattern of light and darkness around them. Using that data it can fill in the background behind objects, and allow you to pan around as if you're looking at a 3D scene in a video game.
