New Season Scents: Finding A Fragrance For Autumn

The start of a new season is always a good excuse to give your wardrobe and update, but perfume - that just lasts until the bottle is empty, doesn't it?

Well yes, some of us have been known to cling on to our perfumes like they're going out of fashion (it's the memories!) but just like shoes, scent is also very dependent on the season. There's even such a thing as a fragrance trend.

So - although we're still longing to sip on rose in the park - it's almost time to switch our summer scents to those more suited to autumn. This means welcoming the perfumes of "nut, quince, vanilla, tuberose", French fragrance house Diptyque told us. "It's time for the late harvest of forbidden fruits and to savour the last sun blasts before winter".

The scents of forbidden fruits? Suddenly autumn fragrances sound all exciting and mysterious.

Don't be put off by the idea of sickly sweet berry perfumes though. Nick Gilbert from Penhaligon's, also suggests choosing "woodsy, ambery and resinous fragrances" for this time of year.

"Look for scents with notes such as iris, benzoin, vanilla and leather - they impart a richness, enveloping the wearer in a protective veil", he said.

As for what's popular for A/W 13? "Iris and gourmand notes (including honey, vanilla, and other foody aromas) continue to crop up in the latest launches, showing that comforting and powdery notes are here to stay".

With that advice in mind, here's our pick of the best new fragrance launches for Autumn/Winter:
