Border tension was put to one side as the United States defeated Panama midweek to gift Mexico a frankly undeserved World Cup playoff qualifier with New Zealand, much to the delight of a couple of Mexican commentators.
Panama were 2-1 ahead and Mexico were losing by the same scoreline in Costa Rica in the 90th minute, meaning the two-times World Cup hosts would miss out on a finals berth for the first time since 1990.
But Graham Zusi then netted a stoppage-time equaliser for the United States and Panama, stunned by the leveller and in need of three points, pushed forward only for the Americans to break away, allowing Aron Johannsson to lash in the winner.
Watching from afar, a couple of commentators were pleased.
"Goooooooooooooollllllll! Goooooooollllllll! We love you! We love you forever and ever! God bless America!" exclaimed the commentator.
Mexico lost to Costa Rica but were winners in defeat. And Raúl Jiménez's sensational 85th minute winner against Panama last week proved critical.
