A seven-year-old boy has been killed after he stepped off a bus with his mother.

Nathan Smith was in a collision with a Peugeot van and was taken to hospital with serious injuries where he later died.

The boy, who was from Lingdale, in Redcar and Cleveland, was on Boosbeck High Street when the incident happened last night.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been bailed.

Roads in the immediate area were closed for a short time to allow emergency services access and for investigation work to begin.

Tributes to Nathan have been paid on Facebook.

One read: “So sad thinking of the family and friends RIP little man .”

Another message said: “RIP little man playing with angels now.

“Deepest sympathy to the whole family.”

One tribute said: “Just horrendous. Thoughts go out to the poor family.”

Cleveland Police are appealing for any witnesses, particularly from any passengers on the 4B Arriva bus to Skelton who may have seen what happened.

Anyone with information should contact the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit on 101.
