Meet The Robot Newsreaders From The Future

Japan Has Robot Newsreaders

Fans of Edward R. Murrow look away now as the modern day newsreader could soon be replaced by super-realistic robots.

Unveiled at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Japan, the robot you see below is called an Otonaroid and has been built to mimic humans in almost every way.

Everything from the skin on its face to the way it moves its head has been carefully reconstructed form a human template.

These droids were made in collaboration with ATR Hiroshi Ishiguro Laboratories to ask visitors the deep and philosophical questions that'll need to be answered if we're to genuinely consider integrating robots and androids into our daily lives.

What does it mean to be human? At what stage does a robot stop becoming an 'it'?

At the moment they're remote controlled -- which means that in true Wizard of Oz fashion there's a person behind the curtains speaking and controlling the robot's movements.

For newsreading, however, things start to get interesting: the robot is able to pull through news feeds and read them out, with multiple languages promised in the future.

One thing you can't deny is how realistic they look. Engadget's Matt Smith was able to get up close and personal with one of them and the appearance is uncanny.
