Jourdan Dunn Is First Black Model To Land Solo British Vogue Cover In 12 Years

Jourdan Dunn has become the first black model to star on the British Vogue cover in more than a decade.

The 24-year-old, who has spoken out about racism in the fashion industry before, posted the February cover to her Instagram account on Friday exclaiming: “I’m so Happy to finally say I’M ON THE COVER OF BRITISH VOGUE!!!"

The last black model to feature on British Vogue's cover was Naomi Campbell in 2002 - that was 12 years and 136 covers ago.

Let that sink in for a moment.

While Dunn has appeared on the cover of British Vogue before (alongside Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Eden Clark in 2008) this is the model's first solo cover.

"It’s lazy. You always hear, ‘There aren’t enough black models’, which is bulls***. It’s all about these dead excuses."

She added: "The people higher than me – the stylists, the designers, the casting directors – they’re the ones with the power to change this. There’s where the conversation needs to happen… At big dog level."

But British Vogue isn't the only fashion magazine to fail so miserably in this regard.

According to a recent study, a long list of magazines failed to use a single non-white model on their covers in 2014 - these include Harper's Bazaar U.S. and U.K, Porter, Love Magazine and a whole host of editions from the Vogue franchise.

Talking to HuffPost UK Lifestyle in December, Angel Sinclair, founder of Models of Diversity Campaign said: "It's appalling that there's still no equality of esteem for models of all colours and it's particularly distressing to see this in the big brands.

"The industry is supposed to be at the cutting edge, yet it is woefully behind the times regarding diversity and representing its audience. Shame!"
