Russia wants to connect Britain to the United States –- by one long superhighway. Reported by The Siberian Times, authorities in Moscow are looking into a Trans-Eurasian Belt Development across Russia, which would link to existing motorway systems in western Europe, creating one 12,400 stretch of road.
The development would see a modern highway built that follows the route of the Trans-Siberian railway, linking Yekaterinburg in the west to Vladivostok in the east. A train line would also be built, with transportation links extending across the Bering Strait to Alaska, though the report did not say how the 55 miles between Russian and the US would be spanned.
According to the newspaper, the “ambitious and expensive” project was recently proposed at a meeting of the Russian Academy of Science. According to Vladimir Fortov, the Head of the Academy, the development would “solve many problems in the development of the vast region.”
