Nike Surprised Michael J. Fox With World's First 'Back To The Future' Self-Tying Trainers

Michael J. Fox tried on the first ever pair of self-tying trainers in honour of Back to the Future day on Wednesday.

The Nike Mags are inspired by shoes which feature in the 1989 second film of the trilogy but until now remained in the realms of science fiction.

Nike wrote a letter to the film star which said: "Almost thirty years ago we embarked on a journey to create a glimpse into "the future".

"Although the project started as science fiction, we're now proud to turn that fiction into fact."

A limited run of the shoes will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

An earlier version of the trainer was released in 2011 but without the new technology.

Nike say the self-tying feature is still in its infancy and hope to roll out more advanced versions in the future.

The shoes have two buttons, a green one to tighten and a red one to loosen.

Nike said:

"Almost 30 years ago, Nike was asked to collaborate on a movie that would feature scenes set in the futuristic world of 2015. The brand was challenged to imagine sneakers that would suit the inhabitants of the advanced era. The innovation team, which regularly looks into a crystal ball of athlete insight and technology to project the future of sport, took that task further.

"The resulting Nike Mag reinvented the conventional lacing system, integrating it into an inimitable design that became an enduring beacon of popular culture."

CEO Mark Parker said: "By imagining the future, we create it. Product that comes alive, with on-demand comfort and support when you need, product that senses you and adapts to you is right around the corner."
