No expense was spared for the infamous Gupta family wedding -- a R30-million affair allegedly paid for by the SA Revenue Service (Sars) -- which, according to emails leaked to Times Live, featured some extravagant delights for the guests in attendance.
The event, held in 2013 at the luxurious Palace of the Lost City in the Sun City resort, was called the "event of the millennium" by KPMG Africa's chief executive at the time, Moses Kgosana.
And little wonder -- just the dessert platters featured "golden berries", Lindt chocolate balls and imported fruits at a cost of R150,000.
A R310‚000 fireworks display and R470,000 for 'beverages' topped the expenses for the event. Vegetables came in at R170,000 and some R70,000 was spent on milk sachets. All of this was allegedly paid for by the South African taxpayer, with embattled auditing firm KPMG writing the cost of the wedding off as a business expense.
"My wife and I were privileged to attend and enjoyed every moment and every occasion," Kgosana said in a thank-you note to Atul Gupta. "I have never been to an event like that and probably will not because it was an event of the millennium."
