Avocado Prices Are Set To Rise, This Is Not A Drill

Brace yourselves fellow avocado fans, we have some rather distressing news.

According to a new report in trade magazine The Grocer, the price of avocados in set to soar due to high demand and lack of supply.

The report states that sales of avocados are up by as much as 25% since last year in the UK.

At the same time, avocado producers in the Mediterranean have been hit by El Nino - the weather pattern that causes adverse conditions such as colder winters - which has made production more difficult.

Sandra Kajda, category buyer for fruit and vegetable supplier Reynolds, told the magazine the poor weather could cause production to fall by 30% this year, which will only increase prices further.

She added that high demand for avocados was down to the fact that the fruit has become "more of a mainstream product" across the EU, US and Australia.

But Jaime Cardenas, director of the Peruvian Trade Office in London, reassured the public that avocado producers were investing in ways to increase the supply.

"This is one of the reasons behind the strong efforts that are being made in selected markets like the UK, Europe and China," he said.

This isn't the first report to suggest our days of eating avocados may be numbered.

In May, a report from The Independent warned that long periods of drought in Canada could lead to avocados becoming extinct.

The report claimed Canada produces a billion pounds of avocados between March and September each year. The problem is, it takes around 141 gallons of water to produce one pound of avocados.

Yikes.
